This year's Agrokomplex international agriculture and food fair opened in Nitra on Thursday, August 23, with almost 500 companies taking part. Until it ends on August 26, the fair, which ranks among the most-frequently visited events at Nitra's famous exhibition ground each year, will host thematic exhibitions showcasing Slovak national as well as regional products and services.
Other subsidiary events include the COOPEXPO international co-operative exhibition of consumer goods, a tradesmen's market, an exhibition dedicated to renewable energy resources, and exhibitions relating to health and beauty. The organisers informed the TASR newswire that they expect more than 80,000 people to visit the fair this year.
A number of state officials attended the opening ceremony, including Prime Minister Robert Fico and Agriculture Minister Ľubomír Jahnátek, who in a speech said that there was a need to revitalise the exhibition ground and promised to provide financial support. "We want to introduce new activities that would highlight the diversity and importance of the agriculture and food sector. We would like to set aside more money for the exhibition ground so that it can become a showcase for Slovak farmers," he said, as quoted by TASR.
