DUTCH-owned international supermarket company Ahold confirmed it will sell its shops to Condorum, a firm close to J&T financial group, the Sme daily reported in its November 15 issue. The transaction will now have to be cleared by the Anti-Monopoly Office.
Ahold explained that the departure from Slovakia will allow it to develop its business in the Czech Republic where it currently runs 283 supermarkets under the brand name Albert, with revenues at €1.76 billion last year. The company left Poland in 2007 where it sold its 179 supermarkets, 15 hypermarkets and four fuel stations to Carrefour, as reported by Sme.
At the moment, Ahold controls 20 premises under Hypernova brand and four Albert supermarkets in Slovakia which reported revenues at €159 million last year. Condorum already owns 90 shops running under the Terno and Moja Samoška brands, with revenues of €127 million in 2012. The authorised representative of the firm is Michal Holík who managed several companies under J&T, Sme wrote.
