A man convicted of a double murder in a popular downtown Bratislava pub in 1999, Mikuláš Polonyi, was freed on appeal by the Supreme Court because of a conflict in the testimony of witnesses who identified him as the shooter.
Although one witness identified Polonyi definitely, two others changed their testimony as the trial went on.
Polonyi was originally convicted of killing a restaurant owner and injuring his brother, as well as slaying a university student celebrating his graduation, in an incident that shocked customers at the popular ex-pat hangout.
