“The 66-year-old storeowner was shot in the leg and arm and, despite the effort of paramedics, died on the spot. His wife, three years his junior, suffered gunshot wound in the arm and buttock, and was rushed to hospital,” Bratislava Regional Police spokeswoman Karina Považanová told the TASR newswire. The woman had to undergo surgery and is in stable condition, according to Health Ministry spokeswoman Martina Lidinská.

The alleged shooter is hospitalised without any need for any surgical procedures, she said.

According to police, Ján stormed the jewellery store around 17:00, armed with an SA Vz 61-Scorpion submachine gun, and demanded jewellery and cash.

“Due to an as-yet unknown reason, the accused opened fire on the 66-year-old man and 63-year-old woman,” said Považanová.

Both victims were Armenians. Police detained the robber a few minutes after the attack and will keep him in custody. If convicted, the man faces up to 15 years in prison.
