Entrepreneur Alojz Hlina, who became well-known after stealing the Slovak state flag from Slovak National Party (SNS) headquarters in Bratislava and engaging in various types of political protests, announced on Monday, August 23, that he will stand for the post of mayor of Bratislava at the local elections in November.
Hlina said that he will launch his so-called tram campaign on August 24 in which he will spend a month travelling on public transport. In addition, he will open his election headquarters to the public on August 26.
Hlina had said that he would not run if the city apologised for selling the Luxorka residential building to an entrepreneur who was supposed to offer the flats inside for sale immediately to their tenants. The entrepreneur did not do so, disconnecting the flats from electricity, heat and water supplies instead.
The city replied that it does not have anything to do with the Luxorka case or with the case of one of the tenants, Mrs. Neumullerová, to whom Hlina drew attention.
“Mrs. Neumullerová was 87 ... and she lived out her final months without water and electricity, forced to answer the call of nature in a plastic bag. This case didn't happen in the Caucasus but in the centre of Bratislava,” said Hlina as quoted by the TASR newswire, citing an example of why he decided to run for the post of mayor. He added that he was a neighbour of the woman at the time.
