Amazon.com officially opened its sales support centre in Bratislava on August 4 at a ceremony attended by Martin Chren, advisor to Economy Minister Juraj Miškov and Robert Šimončič, the general director of the Slovak Development and Trade Agency (SARIO), the TASR newswire reported.
Amazon plans to create more than 200 new jobs in Slovakia by the end of 2012, the Economy Ministry said.
The new centre will facilitate trade negotiations with the aim of helping Amazon's salespeople be more successful. The goods they sell represent 30 percent of all orders carried out on Amazon's website, TASR wrote.
"I'm happy that Amazon has established itself in Slovakia in such a short time since our road-show in the US. This is a reflection of the improvement in the business environment. We want to see Slovakia become the most attractive country for investments in central and eastern Europe," Chren said, as quoted by TASR.
Amazon.com is among the 500 largest companies in the US. It first appeared on the internet in 1995 and is currently the largest internet shop in the world.
