Slovakia should take a stand against attacks on civilians and the violation of human rights in the Israel-Lebanon conflict, Amnesty International urged Foreign Minister Ján Kubiš.
The European Union states are signatories to the Geneva conventions and are thus duty bound to secure the observance of international humanitarian law, including inquiries into the accusations of war crimes and the bringing of perpetrators to justice, said Ingrid Králová of AI Slovakia.
Amnesty International called on EU member states to issue a clear statement urging an immediate ceasefire, an end to attacks on civilians and the formation of a corridor for humanitarian aid.
The EU, according to the human rights organisation, must stop shipments of weapons to Israel and Lebanon as well as ban their transport over EU airspace.
The civilian death toll from the latest Israeli attacks at southern Lebanon stands at 56, half of whom were children. Hezbollah has killed at least 18 civilians and injured hundreds of people. So far, about 500,000 people have been relocated within the country and 150,000 have fled to Syria, news wire TASR wrote.
