LESS than three weeks before elections, the presidential race is getting dramatic. The opposition party Smer announced that it would support Ivan Gasparovic, candidate of the Movement for Democracy party.

However, for the first time, Movement for a Democratic Slovakia candidate Vladimir Mečiar leads the candidates' popularity chart.

Incumbent Rudolf Schuster occupies third place. Analysts say that Gašparovič might endanger Schuster's position but could hardly catch up with Kukan and Mečiar.

The ruling coalition has another candidate, Christian Democrat MP František Mikloško, supported by the Hungarian Coalition Party. He does not plan to withdraw from the race.
