MILAN Kepeňa, the vice chairman of the liberal New Citizen's Alliance (ANO), is leaving the party.

Kepeňa announced his decision to party leader Pavol Rusko on January 23, the SITA news agency wrote.

His departure comes as a surprise as Kepeňa stood by Rusko at the end of 2005 when a conflict within ANO was at its peak.

However, ANO member Eva Černá said she had expected this move from Kepeňa. She suggested that he might start working with the Free Forum party, which was established by the former members of PM Mikuláš Dzurinda's Slovak Democratic and Christian Union.
