Another opposition candidate for the post of chair of the Supreme Audit Office (NKÚ), Vladimír Klimeš failed to be elected after he received only 59 out of 136 votes from the MPs present in parliament on Tuesday, December 11. Thirty-one deputies voted against the nominee, while 40 abstained from the vote and six cast invalid ballots, the TASR newswire reported.
Klimeš, a nominee of the Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) party, was the second opposition candidate for the post. The first was former SaS MP Kamil Krnáč, who failed to get elected despite two attempts and subsequently withdrew his candidacy. In the first vote, held in July, Krnáč got only 53 votes, i.e. well under the total number of votes controlled by the opposition parties. At the second attempt, in September, his support rose to 63.
The governing Smer party says that the NKÚ post ‘belongs’ to the opposition, yet the candidate must have the wholehearted support from all opposition lawmakers, TASR wrote. Since Smer has a simple majority in parliament, a candidate must have the support of at least some Smer MPs in order to be elected.
The office is currently held by Ján Jasovský, a nominee of the Movement for a Democratic Slovakia (HZDS), whose term expired in February.
