Accompanied by loud drumming on metal barrels, citizens from the town of Pezinok dressed in protective suits and wearing gas masks protested again in front of Slovakia’s government office in Bratislava on May 19 against continued use of a controversial waste dump built in this historical town in western Slovakia, the TASR newswire reported.
According to Marián Šipoš of the civic initiative Waste Dumps Do Not Belong in Towns, protests will continue until the government stops making excuses and starts dealing with the demands of Pezinok citizens.
“It looks as if the Cabinet and the whole executive power cannot hear us, so we came here to let them know about us more loudly. We see a serious problem in the fact that the Ministry of Construction and Regional Development does not make decisions but only announces things to us. We are waiting for a decision whether the Pezinok waste dump was in accordance with laws and legal regulations but the ministry has been sending us announcements we did not ask from it at all,” Šipoš stated.
