This year’s April was unusually warm in Slovakia, breaking records of average monthly temperatures in some locations that have been kept for 84 years.
“Oravská Lesná (Žilina Region), Poprad and Medzilaborce (both Prešov Region) saw the breaking of 84-year old records from 1934,” said Pavol Faško, climatologist of the Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute (SHMÚ) as cited by the TASR newswire.
While the extreme south-west and the southern part of the country saw their respective records broken by only decimal fractions of one degree Celsius - due to the warm April in these areas both in 2000 and 2009 - the new records of average monthly temperature in northern Slovakia were sometimes 2-2.5 degrees higher last month compared to previous top figures.
SHMÚ noted that April was the second unusually warm month in Slovakia this year, as January was 3.9 degrees Celsius warmer than the 1981-2010 average in Hurbanovo (Nitra Region), which is located in the warmest area in Slovakia. However, April was 4.9 percent warmer than average in Hurbanovo, stressed Faško.
At the same time Hurbanovo also saw eleven ‘summer days’ (i.e. days with highs reaching at least 25 degrees Celsius) this April, equalling the record figure from 2000.
