Reform of the Slovak Army along Nato guidelines, to be smaller, more mobile and less reliant on heavy weapons, will take until 2015 rather than 2010 as previously thought, Defence Minister Jozef Stank said September 24. It should become fully professional by 2006.
The announcement came days after the Defence Ministers of Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Poland agreed to form a regional military unit to be led by a Slovak general, headquartered in Slovakia and functional by 2005.
