Nitra Police to patrol on bikes
Nitra policemen are going to be equipped with four new bicycles by the end of April that the department says will help them respond quicker to reported trouble spots around Nitra's downtown. Police representatives say that one of the advantages in using the bikes is that they can now reach places which were not accessible by car. They also said that there were environmental and financial reasons behind the purchase.
The four bikes and special equipment will cost the city 140,000 Slovak crowns ($3,300) much lower when comparing the price of a new patrol car, 450,000 crowns ($10,700). Police also said that they could cover more terrain with the bikes.

Postmen fake robberies, get caught
On Monday, April 12, 30 year-old postman Ľuboš H. from Bratislava reported to the police that he had been robbed by a thief who had allegedly sprayed tear gas in his eyes, took away his glasses and stole a postal bag that had over 72,000 crowns ($1,700) in it.
But Bratislava police later found out that the mail deliverer had made a deal with a friend who performed the fake robbery. The two then later split the money in half amongst themselves. However, they weren't able to spend the entire sum so 54,000 crowns ($1,285) were returned to Slovak Post.
A similar case occurred on March 16, when another 29 year-old postman was reportedly taken for 13,000 crowns ($310), money he had collected for newspaper subscriptions that day. The postman told the police that he had been physically threatened by the thief. Again the police discovered that the postman had made up the story, as they found no evidence of a physical attack. The police later discovered that the postman had lost the money in a local restaurant gambling the night before the assumed robbery. Both postmen and the accomplice will be prosecuted for embezzlement.

Teenage girls caught destroying tombstones
Two teenage girls confessed to vandalising the cemetery in Diviaky nad Nitricou (Nitra region) on April 4 in order to "prove their courage" to their friends. The parents of 15-year-old Erika from Opatovce nad Nitrou and 16-year-old Monika from Diviaky nad Nitricou will have to pay the 2,500 crowns ($58) of damage the girls inflicted upon the tombstones.
