The Gemer-Malohont Museum in Rimavská Sobota is attracting visitors with an interesting exhibition of artworks made from human hair. Each month the exhibitions change and currently the paintings in gilded wooden frames come from a school for girls in Rimavská Sobota and show the tastes of the bourgeois class of this region during the second half of the 19th century.
The decorative pictures, requiring a high level of creativity and extraordinary patience, are fascinating handiworks. They were created using a combination of fair and dark wisps of human hair, red, black and golden glass beads and glitter. They are sewn onto a paper bottom layer coated with a light blue or white silk fabric.
The author of the artworks is Róza Richter-Krich. “However, we do not know whether she was a student or an instructor in the lessons of embroidery. The works were donated to the museum in 1903,” Eva Ádámová, the museum’s historian, told the TASR newswire.
