THE DEPARTMENT of Economics and Finance of the Institute for Advanced Studies in Vienna, Austria is accepting applications for a two-year economics programme commencing in September 2008. These programmes form a solid foundation for excellent training and creative research in Vienna. The lectures and seminars are held by internationally renowned visiting professors and the institute's highly qualified faculty. All courses are held in English and class sizes are small. Visiting professors, international scholars, and faculty are also available to students for consultation.
The application is available at www.ihs.ac.at. Fluency in written and spoken English is required. The faculty will conduct telephone interviews with qualified applicants prior to admission. Successful candidates are expected to possess a minimum standard of competency in mathematics. To get an idea of this minimum standard, take a look at the entrance examinations of previous years, which are available online. Two letters of recommendation are required as part of the application.
The deadline is May 15, 2008. A final decision on admissions will be made by mid-June. The institute does not charge tuition or fees for the programme, but there are a limited number of scholarships awarded to several students on a competitive basis each year. The number of scholarships depends on the availability of funding and the class size, along with individual qualifications. Scholarship notification will be given at the same time as notification of admission in mid-June. For more information, contact Walter H. Fisher, Department Head, Economics and Finance: fisher@ihs.ac.at or see www.ihs.ac.at/index.php3?id=1233.
