One of the world's largest talc deposits has been discovered near Gemerská Poloma in Košice region, the daily Hospodárske Noviny reported on October 3.
"The deposit in Slovakia is most likely the third largest in the world, right after deposits in Pakistan and India," the daily reported, quoting Robert Schmid, director of Schmid Industrieholding and owner of the Austrian VSK Mining company, which financed the exploratory drilling.
VSK Mining, which is seeking a 20-percent share of the world's talc market, is expected to create around 100 new jobs in its talc mine and related processing plant. Building of the talc mine and processing plant will require an investment of about €20 million. The operation is expected to be launched in 2014.
Talc is the softest mineral known to man and has a wide range of industrial and personal care uses.
