MOSCOW is facing ever greater isolation from the international community, and if it continues its provocative steps it can expect further sanctions, Canadian Foreign Minister John Baird said on April 23 during his visit to Slovakia. According to him, Canada is concerned about Russian actions in Ukraine and the illegal occupation of Crimea.
Baird, who paid a visit to Slovakia on his tour of central and eastern European countries, met with his Slovak counterpart Miroslav Lajčák. He recalled that the crisis in Ukraine has been dragging on for longer than expected, and therefore the international community must send a clear signal that it cannot continue like this, the TASR newswire reported.
“We recently signed a series of sanctions and we might adopt some more,” Baird said, as quoted by TASR. “If Russia does not comply with the recent agreement from Geneva, other steps will follow, there should be no doubt about it.”
Lajčák added that Slovakia does not consider sanctions a preferred solution, but a necessary response to the current situation. He pointed out that the EU has already approved two sets of sanctions and is now discussing a third round with serious economic consequences.
