Sliač, a regional airport in central Slovakia, will continue to operate; if the state does not want it – as seems to be the case – the Banská Bystrica Self-Governing Region (BBSK) is ready to take it over and continue running it, the Pravda daily wrote.
This was the BBSK’s reaction to the statement of Transport Minister Ján Počiatek that the government might reconsider operation of regional airports due to high costs and relatively low performance, reducing activity at them and even cancelling others. BBSK head Vladimír Maňka told the SITA newswire on August 27 that the region sees the airport as worth saving, as it has the lowest costs calculated per each transported passenger of all regional airports. He added that the airport is in such a phase of development that by 2015, it should have a balanced budget and not be in need of subsidies. “Until then, we have to manage it in a way so as not to slow down the development, or even to return it backwards,” Maňka said, promising to do what he can for the continued development of Sliač Airport.
