YET ANOTHER new investor is coming to Banská Bystrica: Germany's Burgmaier Metalltechnik, a specialist producer of precision turned parts for the automobile industry. The reason? A highly-skilled workforce, sound infrastructure, low labour costs – and a preponderance of other automobile industries.

According to the SME daily, the company has been seeking to expand into central or Eastern Europe for awhile. It recently bought Precision Parts Slovakia in Banská Bystrica following the bankruptcy of the firm's Swiss owner, Glatzfelder, at the beginning of 2004.

Burgmaier Metalltechnik plans to expand production at Precision Parts Slovakia and to increase the workforce from 15 to 100 people within two years, according to the investor's Bruno Schick.

This project will involve buying up an additional 80,000 to 100,000 square metres of land for the construction of a production hall that is equal in size to the company's factories in France and Germany.

Burgmaier's German clients are mostly major carmakers such as DaimlerChrysler and Volkswagen, or suppliers like Bosch and Continental.

Burgmaier Metalltechnik is based in Allmendingen, Germany, and currently employs around 500 people.
