EXPERT on constitutional law Eduard Barány gave up his membership in the Judicial Council after Andrej Kiska took over the presidential office.
Barány, who was appointed a member of the council by President Ivan Gašparovič, said he did not wish to be associated with President Kiska in any way.
“It would be very unpleasant for me,” Barány said, as quoted by the SITA newswire, adding that he does not want to occupy the place with Kiska’s nominee.
The resignation becomes effective two months after it is announced, which means that Barány’s membership should last until mid August, unless the new president dismisses him from the post “which I suppose he will do”, Barány said, as quoted by SITA. Such a dismissal is effective immediately.
President Kiska announced prior to his inauguration that the judiciary will be one of his first priorities, and he is expected to hold a press conference to specify his steps in this area in the first week of his presidency.
Kiska is reportedly planning to exchange the three Judicial Council members that the president appoints, SITA wrote.
Barány was appointed to the council in October 2012, when the term of his predecessors expired.
