A bear seen roaming around a residential area in Lučenec in Banská Bystrica region over the past weekend has become aggressive, entering the garden of a house in the nearby village of Veľká nad Ipľom before tearing apart and eating a dog, village mayor Gabriel Rácz told the TASR newswire on May 24.
"There's an elderly lady living in the house where the bear attacked and ate the dog. Fortunately, the bear didn't threaten any of our people," said Rácz, who has warned locals about the animal via radio, calling on everyone to keep their pets indoors and not go outside after dark.
The animal was first spotted in Lučenec near a children's playground in early Sunday. Veterinary doctor Jaroslav Čermák said that it was probably a young brown bear that had been evicted from its territory by an older bear.
