The current ruling Slovak government is not fulfilling most of the recommendations of European institutions including the Venice Commission, the Council of Europe and the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), according to the leader of the extra-parliamentary Hungarian Coalition Party (SMK), József Berényi. His comments came during a meeting with Joseph Daul, chairman of the European People’s Party Group in the European Parliament, the TASR newswire reported.
“The Slovak governing coalition has not committed to drawing up a comprehensive law on the protection of minorities, even though there are people’s parties represented in the government [i.e. the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ) and the Christian Democratic Movement (KDH)],” said Berényi, as quoted by TASR.
Berényi criticised the inactivity of the ruling coalition in fulfilling its promise to scrap the changes to the State Citizenship Act adopted by the last government in the wake of Hungary’s declared intention to grant citizenship en masse to ethnic Hungarians living abroad.
“Due to the law a number of people have lost their Slovak citizenship,” Berényi said.
