Boards to improve orientation

INFORMATION boards will appear in 60 locations across the Western, High, and Belianske Tatras over the next few years. Two boards are already in position in Predné Solisko, in the High Tatras, after members of the Tatry-EU-Vrcholy (Tatras-EU-Peaks) civic association installed them there on October 3, the SITA newswire wrote.

The boards display the names of individual peaks, valleys, and interesting sites that can be seen from Predné Solisko. A new board will very likely be added in front of the Chata pod Soliskom cottage showing a view of the Low Tatras. In good weather, almost the entire range of the Low Tatras can be seen from the cottage.

Milan Kapusta, a photographer and mountaineer, got the idea for the boards during a tour of Tatranská Javorina.

“A bus full of Polish tourists arrived there and their guide showed them Gerlachovský peak, which cannot be seen at all from Javorina,” Kapusta explained during a festive installation ceremony at Predné Solisko.

The association installed the first board in 2006. It appeared at Veľká Svišťovka, on a hiking path that ran from Skalnaté Pleso to Zelené Pleso. Other boards have already been placed at Lomnický štít, Štrbské pleso, and Slnečná lúka in Tatranská Lomnica.

More boards should be installed later this year.
