NATO’s spring parliamentary assembly meeting, scheduled for this weekend in Bratislava, has provoked stricter checks on all Slovak border crossings from the beginning of May.
Several hundred policemen have strengthened border and airport patrols in order to protect participants in the meeting, police spokeswoman Magda Krasulová told the SITA news agency on Wednesday. Border checks are focused on foreigners; police are examining travellers and their luggage for explosives, poisons, weapons, and other dangerous material. The police have a list of 2,000 unwanted persons.
As of May 20, 583 delegates, members of delegations, and other guests confirmed their participation in the NATO spring meeting. The assembly will take place from May 28 to June 1.
