The eruption of a volcano in Iceland, which has caused a cloud of volcanic ashes, prevents airports on the British islands from continuing their usual operations and British and Irish authorities issued a ban on flights into the British airspace beginning April 15 at 13:00, the Sme daily wrote.
"Until now, five flights from the M.R. Štefánik Airport Bratislava (BTS) have been cancelled – to two London airports, Stansted and Luton, to Birmingham, Liverpool and to the Irish capital Dublin,” the spokesperson of the airport, Dana Madunická, told the TASR newswire.
However, the situation keeps changing and flights from BTS to the Scottish Edinburgh and the Swedish Stockholm are endangered, too. Madunická recommended passengers to continuously watch the website of the airport and to follow the ever-changing situation. The Irish airline Ryanair that flies from Bratislava airport has already cancelled all flights to and from Ireland, Great Britain, Norway, Sweden, and Denmark.
Finland is also experiencing troubles due to the volcano’s eruption. Some airports in Belgium, the Netherlands, and in western Germany have already cancelled flights. Delays and cancellations of flights will continue also on Friday, the Ryanair marketing manager for Slovakia, Henrike Schmidt, told the Sme. Because of a favourable wind, the eruption has paradoxically not influenced the flights going in and out of Iceland’s capital, Reykyavik which lies about 120 kilometres to the west of the volcano.
