The southern hill below Bratislava'a castle and above the Danube River may be re-developed in the next couple years, said Old Town Spokesman Milan Vajda. "The city is now in the stage where they must decide what will be built," he said, and added that the project would have to be privately financed.
The hill was once home to a thriving Jewish ghetto, but fell into ruins and near-desertion by the 1940's, Vajda explained. It was then torn down, along with the Jewish Synagogue, in the 1970's to make room for the SNP bridge. Now the hill is inhabited by homeless people who live in the caves.
Although no concrete plans have been drawn up, Vajda said that discussions to re-develop the area in the same architectural form of the old Jewish ghetto have taken place.
