NEW EU member states refuse to give up hope that they could receive EU structural funds to help pay for repairs in apartment housing.
Even if Brussels agrees to support funding for apartment houses in Slovakia, Bratislava and its 150,000 citizens living in panel block apartments in Petržalka would not be eligible for assistance. According to the EU, Bratislava citizens are too well off to qualify.
"So far, the issue is open. However, we already know that due to the GDP's high ratio per capita, the possible success has nothing to do with the Bratislava region," Minister of Construction and Regional Development László Gyurovszky told Hospodárske noviny daily.
