As of Friday, September 14, travelers can use a new modern waiting room at Bratislava Main Railway Station. It is located in the unused restaurant in the historical part of the station. Travelers can see the original frescoes and restored historical columns there. The reconstruction cost €825,560 without VAT.
“There is still a lot of work ahead of us,” said Transport Minister Árpád Érsek (Most-Híd) during the ceremonial opening, as cited by the TASR newswire. “But if people, thanks to this lovely space, have the feeling that they are going to a station that is clean and has good services, then they will also be more interested in traveling by train. And this is our goal.”
Now another phase of the main station’s reconstruction will follow. It will also include restoration of the main entrance of the station. The tender has already been promulgated.
“We want the work to be completed by the Hockey World Championship which takes place next May,” said Érsek.

"Part of this phase will be the restoration of the underpass and each railway platform will be equipped with a lift for travelers," said Martin Erdössy, general director of the train station operator, ŽSR. These works should be completed by the end of this year.
The government has allocated almost €3 million for the restoration of the Main Station.
