Bratislava region is the second wealthiest region in any of the 12 countries trying to enter the European Union, with a per capita gross domestic product in 1999 of 95 per cent of the EU average. Only Prague was better at 124 per cent, according to the Eurostat statistical office. Of 56 regions in EU-bound nations, only four show GDP per capita ratios of better than 75 per cent of the EU average. In comparison, London is the wealthiest EU region (242 per cent) followed by Brussels (217) and Luxembourg (186).
