The number of local and foreign visitors to the Slovak capital, Bratislava, dropped in 2009 by almost 8 percent compared with the record year of 2008, Deputy Mayor Anna Dyttertová announced at a news conference on Wednesday, May 26.
She attributed the result to the global economic crisis, and its impact on tourism, as well as the bankruptcy in September of the low-cost airline Sky Europe Airlines. In total, 702,000 tourists used accommodation facilities in Bratislava and spent more than 1.34 million nights in the city.
By comparison, other European countries reported an average six-percent decline in the use of accommodation facilities, while across Slovakia it was 26 percent, the SITA newswire wrote. According to the city, the worst period was the first quarter of last year, since when the situation has gradually improved.
