Residents of Bratislava can help needy families in developing countries by bringing their used clothing and shoes to drop-off spots set up by the People to People project affiliated with the HUMANA international humanitarian movement. Bratislava is the first municipality in Slovakia to organise the collection effort. Special collection receptacles for textiles, clothing and shoes are now located in 22 places in Petržalka, Ružinov, Dúbravka, Záhorská Bystrica, Devín, Jarovce, and Rusovce.
Christian Sööt, the manager of the Bratislava project, told the SITA newswire that the clothing will be sorted and one part will be sent to developing countries in Africa. The other part will be sent to second-hand shops here and the earnings will be used to finance other HUMANA projects such as HIV prevention and various educational programs. Currently, HUMANA has about 29,000 of these collection receptacles across the globe and supports humanitarian activities in Africa, Latin America and Asia, especially in India and China.
