Slovakia’s Special Court was not established in accordance with the country’s constitution, the Constitutional Court ruled on May 20.
A majority of the Constitutional Court’s plenum of judges voted to support a motion to have several provisions of the law establishing the Special Court and the Special Prosecutor Office declared ‘anti-constitutional’. The proposal was lodged by a group of 46 MPs from the ruling coalition.
The MPs behind the proposal are mainly from the junior coalition party the Movement for a Democratic Slovakia (HZDS), led by former prime minister Vladimír Mečiar.
Following the verdict the Special Court and the Special Prosecutor’s Office will cease to exist. Also, persons sentenced by the Special Court may in theory request that their cases be reviewed.
The Special Court was established by the previous government to fight high-level corruption and organised crime, the SITA newswire wrote.
