Brezno student captures third place in Intel ISEF 2012 competition

Peter Horváth, a high school student from Brezno in Banská Bystrica Region, won third place out of 1,600 students from 68 countries at the Intel ISEF 2012 competition in Pittsburgh, USA, the TASR newswire reported. Iveta Kureková of the Banská Bystrica Self-Governing Region told TASR that the participants in the competition held May 14-18 competed in 17 scientific categories that included mathematics, chemistry and IT as well as medicine, social sciences and ecology.

Horváth, a young chemist, invented a cheaper and more sensitive method for determining the concentration of the toxic metal cadmium. His method attracted the attention of experts across the world.

He was nominated to participate in Intel ISEF 2012 after his success in the Scienta pro Futuro competition organised by the civic association 'Young Scientists of Slovakia'.
