BRITISH Ambassador to Slovakia Ric Todd confirmed that Great Britain would open its labour market to Slovaks after the European Union admits 10 new countries in May, the news wire SITA reported.
Todd told Slovak Deputy Prime Minister Pál Csáky that Slovak citizens would be able to work, study, and do business under conditions equal to those of current EU inhabitants.
However, the ambassador emphasised that London would not permit the abuse of its social system.
According to Todd, the British government has always supported enlarging the EU and treating new members in the same way as veteran members. But those simply wishing to benefit from social welfare are not welcome and will certainly not receive any aid, he added. The British government is prepared to make its already tough social benefits system even stricter.
Csáky assured the British ambassador that Slovak citizens had no reason to seek welfare in any EU country.
