The construction of the distribution centre of the US company Amazon in the Czech city of Brno was not approved on its third attempt. The city council on March 18 didn’t approve the sale of plots in Černovická Terasa industrial park to the developer, the CTP company. It means end of the negotiations between the developer and the city, according to Brno councillor Roman Onderka who favoured the sale.
The distribution centre will cost about €100 million to build and employ about 2,000 people – and probably 4,000 more temporary workers in the high season, the Sme daily wrote on March 18. Now, the options considered include two other Czech localities, Zlín and Ostrava. But also two Slovak sites: the Eurovalley industial zone near Malacky and the zone close to the Bratislava M.R. Štefánik Airport.
Economy Ministry spokesman Stanislav Jurikovič says that if it was an important investment, Slovakia would consider offering investment stimuli to Amazon. Amazon did not comment for Sme on its future plans, but the head of CTP developer Roman Vos said already by the end of January that their “plan B” was to build the centre near Bratislava.
