The states now have two months to respond to the European Commission. If they do not, they will be fined.

The energy savings are currently one of the priorities of the EU, and has gained added emphasis since tensions have increased with Russia in recent months, currently the biggest supplier of oil and natural gas to EU countries, SITA wrote.

The directive was passed in 2012. Its aim is to decrease the consumption of energy by 20 percent by 2020.
