The KOVO trade union has announced a strike that will affect bus transport between towns and will begin on the afternoon of June 2, KOVO chairman Emil Machyna said at a press conference on Tuesday, May 25.
"The conditions for announcing a strike have been met. Out of the 7,336 employees to whom the collective agreement applies, more than two-thirds supported the strike with their signatures. A strike in solidarity by people to whom the collective agreement doesn't apply was supported by more than two-thirds of the 727 employees," Machyna said, as reported by the TASR newswire.
"The forms of the strike will vary ... It will first take place in Košice and Prešov. Nitra, Trnava and Bratislava will then follow," he said. In the next five days, trade unionists will negotiate with all groups concerned. "We'll make strike announcements. We'll give information one day in advance as to whether it will be a sit-in strike or another form of strike. We'll communicate with the public," said Machyna.
Regional governors still haven't agreed on whether regions will allocate money from their budgets to cover continued travel concessions for Slovak Bus Transport (SAD) drivers and their close relatives, a demand that has divided SAD and the unions.
