Kukan is a member of PM Mikuláš Dzurinda’s Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ). Bútora, on the other hand, runs as a non-affiliated candidate supported by Ivan Šimko’s Free Forum party.

Speculations were spread at the end of last week that Bútora could become Kukan’s replacement and the Free Forum would thus indirectly receive the ministerial post. The move could effectively secure stability for the current ruling coalition.

Šimko and other Free Forum members also denied the information.
