Cabinet amends Criminal Code

THE CABINET has approved changes to the Criminal Code making the process of getting accused criminals to trial easier and quicker, and ensuring that police who break the law be tried by military tribunals.

The changes, introduced by Interior Minister Ivan Šimko on April 17, mean that police can interview people as witnesses in a case and hand the file over to an investigator, rather than having the investigator repeat each interrogation.

It also allows the plaintiff and defendant in cases where the penalty does not exceed three years in jail to reach an out-of-court settlement with the approval of the prosecutor.
