Cabinet appoints plenipotentiary for ethnic minorities

Former Most-Híd MP László Nagy will serve as the government plenipotentiary for ethnic minorities, with effect from Thursday, June 14. The cabinet approved his appointment at its regular session on Wednesday. June 13. The nomination of the new plenipotentiary is based on an agreement with Most-Híd, an opposition party. In the past, the sphere of minority rights fell under the authority of a deputy prime minister, but the current government decided to abolish the post and to establish the position of plenipotentiary instead.

According to the approved statute, the plenipotentiary for ethnic minorities is an advisory body to the government, the SITA newswire wrote. He will coordinate his activities with the head of the Government Office and relevant ministers; he may also set up working groups or commissions. The plenipotentiary is supposed to maintain, develop and promote the rights of ethnic minorities and systematically improve the status of minorities. He should also ensure that the national and international obligations of Slovakia concerning the status and rights of national minorities are observed.
