At its regular meeting on January 30, the Slovak Cabinet approved an amendment to the law on postal services, submitted by a group of parliamentary deputies for the Slovak National Party (SNS), that adjusts the extent of postal exclusivity in order to curb circumvention of current law.
The amendment corrects the wording of the law grammatically and factually. The amendment will bring the law into compliance with the interpretation of the postal legislation within EU member countries, as well as the prepared third postal directive. The European Parliament passed it in the first reading last July and the EU Council last October. A universal postal service is a state duty to secure provision of a collection of postal services on the whole territory of the country.
If the current situation continued, there might no longer be grounds for existence of the postal exclusivity, since mail delivery that it interesting from the economic viewpoint is increasingly being performed by alternative postal operators.
