THE GOVERNMENT is allocating more money to regional state administration school offices even though PM Robert Fico has announced his intention to close them down as soon as possible.

According to the Pravda daily, the cabinet has agreed to double the salaries of the new heads of these offices who were recently appointed by the three parties of the ruling coalition: Smer, the Slovak National Party (SNS), and the Movement for a Democratic Slovakia (HZDS).

The government claims the raises are justified because the new state officers are "employees of exceptional importance". Their salaries could now reach as high as Sk125,000 (€3,500) per month, about seven times the national average wage.
