This week's regular Cabinet session on Wednesday will be held in Tisovec, Central Slovakia, and one of the 22 agenda items it will discuss is the difficult economic and social situation in the district of Rimavská Sobota.
According to an Economy Report that proposes a strategy for its improvement, Rimavská Sobota district, with a population of 82,300, has long had the highest rate of unemployment in Slovakia. At the end of July, it was 27.4 percent.
Other serious problems in the district include the insufficient quality of human resources, resulting from a low educational level, and low quality and accessibility of public infrastructure.
According to a presentation from a working group that included representatives of the Banská Bystrica Region and the Rimavská Sobota district, a solution of four priorities could improve the situation: improving road infrastructure, building industrial zones, developing tourism, and creating a pilot project of a social agricultural farm that could provide jobs for marginalised Roma communities and social outsiders.
Before the start of the Cabinet session, Prime Minister Robert Fico planned to discuss the Rimavská Sobota situation with the head of the Banská Bystrica Region, Milan Murgaš, the Mayor of Tisovec, Peter Mináč, and other local leaders.
