Cabinet reconsiders Roma handling

FOLLOWING CRITICISM from the European Commission, the Slovak government has apparently backed away from plans to give administration of Roma issues to the Culture Ministry, preferring instead a coordinated approach under the Government Office.

Responsibility for solving the problems of the Roma minority in Slovakia has been shuffled between two government offices during the past eight years, in which time Slovakia has made little progress towards easing the unemployment, poor education and discrimination the minority faces.
