AT ITS session yesterday the Slovak cabinet rejected a proposal to widen the competencies of the ombudsman, in the manner proposed by the parliamentary human rights committee, the SITA news agency wrote.
The committee drafted a constitutional amendment that would give the ombudsman the right to initiate a motion at the Constitutional Court. Simultaneously, the committee proposed several changes to the law on the ombudsman itself. The fate of the proposed changes is now in the hands of parliament.
The ombudsman's task is to assist citizens to defend their basic rights and freedoms. Among the most frequent complaints received are extensively long court proceedings or the violation of rights related to proceedings by public administration bodies.
The amendment would give him more rights to process motions relating to the judicial system.
