Cabinet accepted on June 30 the proposal of Justice Minister Ján Čarnogurský that Supreme Court Deputy Chief Justice Jozef Štefanko be sacked. The decision of the cabinet follows a secret vote of the Supreme Court Council of Judges on June 28, in which Štefanko's recall was approved. The matter must now be voted on in parliament.
In early June, Štefanko used an axe to chop his way into an apartment owned by the Justice Ministry. He had been expelled from the flat several years ago for not paying rent. Štefanko also assaulted the general director of the Justice Ministry's General Administration Section, and then accused a "Jewish lobby" of standing behind a move to have charges laid against him.
