SEVEN candidates have applied for the post of European Court for Human Rights (ECHR) judge. The Judicial Council will select the three candidates that Slovakia is required to provide to the Council of Europe by December 2, the TASR newswire reported.
The candidates for the one available position are as follows: Juraj Babjak, Andrea Krisková, Alena Poláčková, Miroslav Gavalec, Jana Zemková, Slovak Government Agent before the ECHR Marica Pirošíková and Associate Dean of the Comenius University Faculty of Law Ondrej Laciak. Three of the seven candidates submitted their applications on the last possible day, November 8, according to TASR.
None of the nominated candidates from January 2013 passed the selection process at the Council of Europe.
After the new nominees were selected in the current selection process, they need to be approved by the Slovak Government and then by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, which will have the last word.
The current judge of the ECHR for the Slovak Republic, Ján Šikuta, finished his term on October 31 this year but will continue to work until he is replaced by a new judge.
