Saint Elizabeth’s School of Health and Social Work might lose the right to grant PhDs in the field of social work. This step could follow the review of such titles granted to about 90 graduates, including chair of the Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) Ján Figeľ, the Sme daily reported.

“This punishment will follow [the review],” Education Minister Dušan Čaplovič told Sme. He did not want to comment on other questions pertaining to granting the titles, explaining he will wait with his decision for recommendations from the Accreditation Committee.

The review of the degrees was launched after Sme wrote about Figeľ’s PhD title, which he received for studying social work even though his diploma thesis described the Slovakia’s integration process into the European Union. The school later admitted that it took into consideration that at that time Figeľ served as European commissioner.

Neither the school nor Figeľ commented on Čaplovič’s comments because the Accreditation Commission has not yet taken a stance. The members of the commission will discuss the results at the beginning of December, Sme wrote.
