The car industry's share of total industrial production in Slovakia reached a record-breaking level of 37 percent in 2009, Car Industry Association (ZAP) president Jozef Uhrík said at a press conference on April 8. "Total industrial production last year exceeded €45 billion, with the car industry representing €17 billion," said Uhrík, as quoted by the TASR newswire.
The sector employed a total of 68,000 people, which represented a year-on-year drop of 8.2 percent, while the total reduction for industry was twice this figure. Meanwhile, revenues in Slovak industry in 2009 fell by more than 21 percent to less than €60 billion in 2009. Revenues in the car industry fell by €3.72 billion to a total of €10.25 billion. Revenues increased by €233 million y-o-y in January 2010, however, noted Uhrik.
According to Uhrík, production is expected to rise again in 2010. "We expect that vehicle production in Slovakia will slightly exceed half a million cars this year," he said. In 1Q10, the Slovak car facilities manufactured a total of 136,000 cars.
